Cheers with wine glasses, romantic setting Surry Hills Parents Night Out Guide

The Great Escape: Restaurants Perfect for a Parents Night Out in Sydney’s Surry Hills

Listen, we love our little treasures. We really do. But if I have to hear the Bluey theme song one more time today, or negotiate the acceptable number of broccoli ‘trees’ a toddler must consume before earning a Freddo Frog, I might actually spontaneously combust. We’ve all been there covered in a mysterious substance that’s either mashed banana or something far more sinister, staring at the clock and praying for 7:00 PM.

Sometimes, the soul needs more than a lukewarm tea and a crust of Vegemite toast. The soul needs a glass of chilled Pet Nat, a candlelit table, and a conversation that doesn’t involve the phrase “don’t put that in your nose.” Welcome to Surry Hills the undisputed heavyweight champion of the parents night out in Sydney. This suburb is the cool, child-free older sister we all secretly want to be. It’s chic, it’s delicious, and most importantly, it’s packed with venues where the only ‘whining’ involves a sommelier and a vintage Pinot Noir.

Put the nappy bag down, call the grandparents (or just book a baby sitter), and let’s dive into the best spots to rediscover who you were before you became a human snack-dispenser.

1. Nomad

Nomad is the ultimate ‘I’m a grown-up’ restaurant. Located in a converted warehouse on Foster Street, it’s spacious enough that you won’t feel cramped, but intimate enough to remember why you liked your partner in the first place. Their wood-fired flatbread with Burrata is basically a religious experience. It’s the perfect place to sit at the counter, watch the chefs work, and forget that your own kitchen currently looks like a glitter bomb went off in it.

2. Firedoor

If your idea of cooking at home is frantically microwaving Dino Nuggets, Firedoor will remind you what heat is actually for. Lennox Hastie is a wizard with fire—no gas, no electricity, just embers and magic. It’s a tough booking to snag, but if you manage it, it’s the gold standard for a parents night out in Sydney. The food is smoky, primal, and incredibly sophisticated—much like your temper after a week of sleep training.

3. Chin Chin

Do you miss noise? Not the ‘high-pitched screaming’ kind of noise, but the ‘vibrant, buzzy, Sydney-cool’ kind? Chin Chin on Commonwealth Street is loud, proud, and serves up South-East Asian flavours that will kick your sleep-deprived tastebuds back into gear. Pro tip: Go for the ‘Feed Me’ menu. After a day of making 4,000 decisions for other people, let someone else decide what you’re eating. It’s pure bliss.

4. Poly

Poly is the wine bar of your dreams. It’s dark, it’s moody, and the wine list is longer than the list of chores you’re currently ignoring. It’s the sibling to Ester, and the food is just as inventive. The grilled sourdough with cultured butter is a mandatory order. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in for three hours and not see a single high chair. Truly, the dream.

5. Pellegrino 2000

Looking for a bit of Italian romance? This Foster Street gem feels like a tiny slice of Rome dropped into the 2010 postcode. The basement dining room is incredibly cosy (and perfect for hiding the dark circles under your eyes). The pasta is handmade, the wine flows like water, and the vibes are impeccable. It’s a popular spot, so you’ll feel like part of the ‘in’ crowd again, even if you do have a stray sticker on your sleeve.

6. Arthur

Decision fatigue is real. If the thought of reading a menu makes you want to cry, Arthur is your sanctuary. They offer a set menu of incredibly creative Australian produce. You just sit down, and the food starts arriving. It’s like being a toddler again, but instead of pureed peas, you’re getting world-class gastronomy. The dining room is small and personal, making it one of the best spots for a quiet parents night out in Sydney.

7. Jane

The younger, slightly more relaxed sister to Arthur, Jane is all about 70s-inspired glamour. It’s intimate, the cocktails are stellar, and the Kangaroo tartare is a must-try. It’s the sort of place that makes you feel instantly cooler just by stepping through the door. Perfect for those nights when you’ve actually managed to put on a dress or a collared shirt.

8. Porteño

Sometimes you just need a big steak and a glass of red. Porteño is an Argentinean grill house that celebrates the art of the fire. The space is beautiful, the service is sharp, and the atmosphere is electric. It’s a great spot to go with another couple to swap ‘war stories’ from the parenting trenches while devouring some of the best meat in the city.

9. Kiln

Perched on top of the Ace Hotel, Kiln offers views that will remind you why you live in this expensive, beautiful city. The décor is stunning, and the food by Mitch Orr is playful and delicious. Being 18 floors up feels like being a million miles away from the chaos of bath time. It’s the ultimate ‘I’m on a night out’ destination.

10. Gildas

Lennox Hastie (of Firedoor fame) opened this wine and tapas bar inspired by the Basque country. It’s sophisticated, fast-paced, and excellent for a ‘tapas-crawl’ style evening. Order a few Gilda skewers, a glass of Sherry, and pretend you’re in San Sebastián rather than a fifteen-minute Uber from a nappy bin.

11. Bastardo

Despite the cheeky name, the service here is lovely. It’s an Italian-ish diner from the team behind Bodega and Porteño. The room is vibrant, the pasta is punchy, and it’s right in the heart of the action on Holt Street. It’s fun, unpretentious, and exactly what the doctor ordered after a long week of school runs.

12. The Dolphin Hotel (Dining Room)

While the pub part is great for a cheeky schooner, the Dining Room at the Dolphin is a design-led masterpiece. It’s sleek, white-draped, and serves incredible modern Italian fare. It’s the kind of place where you can feel ‘fancy’ without it being stuffy. Their pizza is legendary, but the more refined plates are where the magic happens.

13. Foreign Return

Indian food, but not as you know it. This isn’t your local takeaway joint; this is elevated, regional Indian cuisine that is vibrant and deeply flavourful. The cocktails are inspired by Indian ingredients and are perfect for toast-worthy moments. It’s a great way to spice up your parents night out in Sydney.

14. Tokki

For something a bit more modern and upbeat, Tokki serves up incredible Korean-Japanese fusion. Think charcoal-grilled meats, fresh seafood, and a great selection of Soju. It’s energetic and youthful—perfect for reminding yourselves that you’ve still ‘got it’ (even if you are home by 10:30 PM).

Time to Book?

Surry Hills is waiting for you, parents. Whether you want a quiet corner to reconnect or a loud, buzzy room to feel the energy of the city, there is something for everyone.
