About the event

Tired of your kids spending all their time staring at a tablet screen like tiny zombies? Drag them down to Carriageworks for the Sydney Writers’ Festival Family Day, where books are actually cool again. This is the one day of the year where the country’s best storytellers and illustrators gather to prove that imagination is way better than an algorithm. Expect live readings that actually keep the kids quiet, drawing workshops where they might actually learn to color inside the lines, and enough literary energy to make you feel like a top-tier parent for a few hours. Whether they’re into dragons, detectives, or disgusting jokes, there’s a session for every little bookworm. It’s high-energy, high-creativity, and there’s usually a decent coffee cart nearby for the grown-ups who haven’t had a full night’s sleep since 2019. It’s a cracker of a day out that might just inspire the next Great Australian Novelist, or at least get them to read their school books without a tantrum.
