Bored Kids? Skip the Long Drive. This Sydney Staycation Has Thought of Everything

Looking for the best Sydney family staycation for school holidays? Discover how the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth makes luxury travel stress-free for parents and kids alike. School holidays have a habit of sneaking up on families. One minute you’re packing lunchboxes, racing through school drop-off and counting down to the weekend, and the next you’re hearing those two familiar words before you’ve even had your morning coffee: “I’m bored.” For many parents, the dream of a family holiday quickly collides with reality. Flights can quickly blow the family budget, while road trips often involve packing enough snacks to survive a small apocalypse, multiple toilet stops and someone asking, “Are we there yet?” before you’ve even left Sydney.

The good news is creating special family memories doesn’t always require travelling hundreds of kilometres from home. Sometimes the best adventures are hiding right on your doorstep. We recently checked into Sofitel Sydney Wentworth for a city staycation, and it was the perfect reminder that a family escape doesn’t need airport queues, endless packing lists or hours in the car. Within minutes we were in the heart of Sydney, exploring the city, soaking up those holiday feelings and returning to a room that had somehow managed to make everyone feel like they were getting their own little slice of luxury. If you’ve been scouring the internet for the best Sydney family staycation for school holidays, you can finally stop searching we have found the perfect spot.

Why This Is the Best Sydney Family Staycation for School Holidays
The Staycation That Out Holidayed Our Holiday Sofitel Sydney Wentworth

Ask any parent why they hesitate booking hotel stays with children and you’ll usually hear the same answer. The room. Sharing one hotel room sounds lovely in theory, but the reality can look very different. Everyone is on top of each other, bedtime becomes everyone’s bedtime, and parents often end up whispering in the dark scrolling on their phones because waking the kids is not an option. It is hardly the relaxing hotel escape most of us picture when we book a night away. If you’ve been scouring the internet for the best Sydney family staycation for school holidays, you can finally stop searching, we have found the perfect spot.

This is where Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has really thought about what families actually need. Their Family Getaway offer gives families with children up to 12 years old 50% off a second adjoining room, creating that rare holiday balance where everyone has their own space but you are still together. For younger families, baby cribs are available on request, while suites with separate living areas provide those extra spaces that make travelling with children feel so much easier. When we compare options, it’s easy to see why this package consistently ranks as the best Sydney family staycation for school holidays.

We stayed in an interconnecting Prestige Suite, and it changed the whole experience. When you are travelling as a family and sharing space, you expect to feel every bit of that hotel room life where everyone is living on top of each other, but this felt completely different. There was so much space that you could almost get lost, yet we were still close enough to feel connected. The girls loved coming into our room for baths, and the beautiful Le Petit Prince touches made everything feel extra special for them. Sofitel had thought beyond just providing somewhere to sleep; they had created a space where children felt included in the luxury.

And then came the moment that completely changed our evening plans. We were actually booked to dine at Tilda Restaurant, but after a full day exploring Sydney we walked back into the room to discover a surprise teepee waiting for the girls. Game over. There was absolutely no leaving that room after that, and honestly why would we want to? The girls disappeared into their magical little setup, complete with thoughtful touches including artisan chocolates, UNO and a Wobbly Worms Jenga-style game that had them laughing for ages.

Sofitel Sydney Wentworth had created such a cosy little family bubble that this tired mumma was more than happy to sit back, finally open my book and actually read while listening to giggles in the background. That almost never happens on a family holiday. The next thing I knew, the girls had turned their room into their own little pamper session. It was one of those simple holiday moments you don’t plan, but end up remembering the most.

When Room Service Turns Into a Family Feast

One of the highlights of staying somewhere like Sofitel Sydney Wentworth is that you really don’t need to leave the hotel to feel like you have had a holiday experience. We also had access to Club Millésime, which was fantastic throughout the day for grabbing drinks and snacks between our city adventures.

Unfortunately, we missed the family-friendly canapé time before it transitioned into an adults-only retreat around 4:30pm, but this is where the service really stood out. The team made sure the kids were not forgotten. Within moments, a beautiful selection arrived at our room with cheeses, deli meats, apple juice for the girls and a glass of rosé for the adults.

We thought that was it. Then came the roast pork with some of the best crackling we have tasted and steamed vegetables. If only we had known because we had already ordered room service. Not that anyone was complaining. The kids devoured the fish and chicken schnitzel, and you know something is good when children choose the protein first and somehow leave chips behind.

I tucked into a delicious yellow vegetable curry, and yes, somehow we also managed to fit in a margherita pizza. Thank goodness we were not leaving the hotel because by this point nobody was moving. We settled back into our lounge area, screen-casted Happy Feet and finished the night with big family cuddles on the sofa. When it was finally time to tuck the girls into their queen bed, they fell asleep with huge smiles on their faces after a busy day exploring the city.

Sydney Really Does Become Your Playground

One of the best things about choosing a city staycation is that the adventure continues the moment you step outside. Sofitel Sydney Wentworth is perfectly positioned in Sydney’s CBD, meaning everything feels easy. No packing the car, no finding parking, no long drives between activities. With Circular Quay, The Rocks, Sydney Harbour, the Royal Botanic Gardens, shopping, museums and endless places to explore all within reach, Sydney suddenly becomes your holiday playground. The hotel also helps families make the most of their stay with access to savings on some of Sydney’s favourite family attractions including Taronga Zoo, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, the Australian Museum and other iconic Sydney experiences available through concierge.

You can spend the day being a tourist in your own city, then come back to your own little luxury retreat. It really is the best of both worlds.

Breakfast, Bottomless Brunch And Food Worth Coming Back For

When planning the best Sydney family staycation for school holidays, food is always top of mind, and the dining options here really do deliver.

The next morning started exactly how you would expect when kids discover a hotel breakfast, with a direct path to the donuts. To my surprise though, they actually listened when I suggested savoury first. Aurora happily worked her way through crispy bacon and so many golden hash browns we lost count. Arcadia, our little egg queen, tucked into the creamiest scrambled eggs made with love and somehow also managed three chicken sausages.

There is something special about a hotel breakfast where everyone gets exactly what they want, and nobody has to cook or clean up afterwards. Even better, children under 12 enjoy complimentary breakfast when dining with parents at Delta Rue, and during the NSW school holidays kids under 12 dine free, making a luxury family escape feel that little bit easier.

Parents are absolutely not forgotten here either. Sofitel Sydney Wentworth is home to beautiful dining experiences including Tilda, Delta Rue and Wentworth Bar, blending the hotel’s French elegance with modern Sydney dining. While I didn’t get the chance to experience Wentworth Bar properly this time, I have already decided I am booking back in for a mums’ night out. It looked far too inviting not to return. And yes, I still need to make my way back to Tilda Restaurant after our teepee plans took over.

We did, however, get a taste of the incredible dining experiences on offer, including their bottomless brunch. Perfect for adults who want to enjoy a cocktail experience without leaving the kids out, because there is also a dedicated kids menu. Although, let’s be honest, they had the kids at unlimited prawn crackers. The food was a standout. The mushroom spring rolls were packed with flavour, the dumplings were delicious little parcels of goodness, but my absolute favourite was the BBQ chicken. Perfectly cooked, beautifully caramelised and so succulent it was impossible not to go back for more. The fried rice did not disappoint either, loaded with some of the biggest prawns we have seen in fried rice for a while.

Dessert was another family favourite, especially the custard choux bun. Imagine a decadent custard donut with a French twist,  soft, creamy, indulgent and absolutely worth saving room for.

The Little Details That Make Families Feel Welcome

What stood out most during our stay was that Sofitel Sydney Wentworth had not simply added a few child-friendly extras and called itself family-friendly. Any parent knows there is a big difference between a hotel that allows children and a hotel that actually welcomes them. Because taking kids somewhere beautiful can sometimes feel a little stressful. You spend half your time reminding them to use their inside voices, worrying if they are disturbing other guests, or wondering whether everyone around you is secretly wishing you had booked somewhere else.

This never felt like that. Following its incredible transformation, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth still delivers everything you want from a five-star city escape, but somehow manages to make families feel completely at home. The girls had moments created just for them, while we still got to enjoy the things parents crave on holidays too; beautiful food, a little bit of luxury, and a rare chance to slow down.

That is probably the biggest difference between simply booking accommodation and booking an experience. The kids felt like they had been treated to something magical, and we walked away feeling like we actually had a break too.

Luxury Doesn’t Have To Mean Adults Only

Yes, the rooms are beautiful. Yes, the food is incredible. Yes, parents can enjoy those little luxury moments like finishing a coffee while it’s still hot. But the magic was in the thoughtful details. The teepee surprise, the games, the treats, the way staff made sure the girls were included, and the little moments that made them feel like this stay was designed for them too.
