Description

The 1934 Qantas Hangar, now home to the Motor Museum of the Northern Territory and the Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts Club (MVEC), is one of Darwin’s most historic sites. Built for Qantas Empire Airways, this steel-framed structure is a rare survivor of both the 1942 Bombing of Darwin and the devastating Cyclone Tracy in 1974. The scars of WWII are still visible as bullet holes in its original frame, providing a visceral connection to the past. Since 1999, the MVEC has maintained the hangar, restoring it into a workshop and museum that houses an extensive collection of vintage vehicles, steam engines, and historical memorabilia. The collection highlights the resilience of Territory pioneers who relied on mechanical ingenuity to thrive in remote environments. Visitors can see legendary items like the 1885 ‘Sandfly’ steam engine and the Izod Collection of industrial antiques. This volunteer-run facility is a labor of love that preserves the industrial heritage and founding spirit of the Top End.
