Charles Darwin National Park

Charles Darwin National Park offers a unique combination of ecological diversity and wartime heritage, located just a short drive from Darwin’s city center. The park protects a significant portion of the Port Darwin wetlands, including 36 of the Territory’s 51 mangrove species, making it a critical site for conservation. Visitors can explore the park’s extensive network of mountain biking and walking tracks, which wind through diverse ecosystems. A highlight of the park is its historical significance; it contains a collection of World War II bunkers and ammunition storage facilities built in 1944. One of these bunkers has been converted into a visitor center featuring memorabilia and displays about Darwin’s role in the Pacific War. The lookout platform provides stunning panoramic views of the Darwin Harbour and city skyline, especially at sunset. It is a favored spot for locals and tourists alike for birdwatching, cycling, and discovering the rich Indigenous and military history of the Larrakia country.
