Confession: I’d Rather Buy New Clothes Than Iron. Did the Tefal IXEO Vision Change My Mind?

There are household jobs I tolerate, household jobs I put off and then there is ironing. I don’t just find ironing mildly annoying. I have genuinely looked at a creased item of clothing and decided it would be easier to wear something else, and there have probably been occasions when buying something new has felt like a perfectly rational alternative to getting the ironing board out.

Because ironing isn’t just ironing, is it? First you have to get the ironing board out, find somewhere to put it, find the iron, fill it with water, wait for it to heat up, iron the clothes, somehow create a new crease while trying to remove the original one, and then put everything away again. All of that for the privilege of wearing one shirt.

So when the Tefal IXEO Vision All-in-One Garment Care Solution arrived at Parenthood360, it was facing a fairly significant challenge. Could it make someone who actively avoids ironing actually deal with creased clothes? Perhaps even more importantly, could it fix my husband’s ongoing inability to iron the shoulders of a shirt? After living with it, things have improved considerably in our household.

Is the Tefal IXEO Vision easy to use?

This Tefal IXEO Vision review starts with a confession: I hate reading instruction manuals almost as much as I hate ironing.: I hate reading instruction manuals almost as much as I hate ironing. If a household appliance requires me to sit down with a booklet, decipher six diagrams, locate Part G and watch a 14-minute instructional video before I can switch it on, there is a very real possibility it will remain untouched.

So one of my first tests of the IXEO Vision was entirely accidental. Could I work out how to use it without reading anything? Thankfully, yes. I filled the water tank, switched it on and off I went. There were no complicated temperature settings to work out and no moment where I had to admit defeat and retrieve the instruction booklet from the box. For me, that was already a fairly substantial win.

Admittedly, my refusal to read instructions may have contributed to one very minor user error. My first instinct was to use the IXEO Vision exactly like a traditional iron. Iron head, shirt, board; surely we all know what happens next? Except I quickly realised that I didn’t need to press down and iron away in quite the same fashion. I could hover the head over the garment and let the steam do much of the work.

A slight technique adjustment was made, no clothes were harmed in the making of this review, and I was soon steaming rather than aggressively ironing. In fairness to Tefal, this probably says considerably more about my relationship with instruction manuals than it does about the product.

What is the Tefal IXEO Vision and how does it work?

The IXEO Vision sits somewhere between a traditional iron, garment steamer and ironing board, bringing the three functions together in one freestanding garment-care system. Its built-in board can be positioned vertically, horizontally or at an angle depending on what you’re steaming or ironing, which means you aren’t restricted to hanging clothes from a door and attempting to steam them while they swing away from you.

The handheld head is also noticeably easier to manoeuvre than the traditional iron we’re used to wrestling with, while the system heats quickly enough that using it doesn’t feel like the beginning of an entire household project. That last point has turned out to be far more important than I expected, because the biggest difference the IXEO Vision has made isn’t necessarily how we remove creases. It’s how often we’re now prepared to do it.

Does the Tefal IXEO Vision actually make ironing quicker?

For us, yes, but largely because it has removed the annoying setup that previously came with ironing. We are fortunate to have enough space in our home to leave the IXEO Vision standing up and plugged in, and I think this is important if you’re considering buying one.

Ours doesn’t have to be dragged out of a cupboard every time somebody discovers a crumpled shirt. It lives ready to go, so we can walk over, switch it on, quickly steam whatever needs doing and get on with our day. That has completely changed our behaviour. Instead of looking at something and thinking, “That needs ironing, I’ll do it later,” it has become something we can deal with there and then.

There is no ironing-board wrestling match, no elaborate setup and no putting everything away afterwards. For a household that previously regarded ironing as an event requiring significant mental preparation, that convenience matters. The best household appliance, after all, isn’t necessarily the one with the longest list of features. It’s the one you actually use.

Can you steam shirts with the Tefal IXEO Vision?

You can, and this has unexpectedly become one of the strongest endorsements I can give it because my husband is now voluntarily steaming more shirts. Previously, ironing a shirt in our house apparently involved addressing the obvious parts and then declaring the job complete. The shoulders seemed to be considered optional. I personally believe the shoulder is one of the first parts of a shirt you actually see, but my husband and I have historically held differing views on the importance of this particular geographical region of men’s clothing.

The IXEO Vision appears to have resolved our dispute. Because the board can sit vertically and the steam head is easy to manoeuvre around the garment, he can quickly work his way over the whole shirt, including those previously neglected shoulders. His shirts now look properly finished and they’re done within minutes. I consider this both a win for garment care and our marriage.

Can the Tefal IXEO Vision replace an iron and ironing board?

For our everyday use, largely, yes. This isn’t simply a vertical garment steamer. The adjustable board means that when you want the pressure and positioning of more traditional ironing, you can use it that way too. That’s particularly handy for areas such as collars and cuffs where you may want a sharper finish, while other parts of a garment can be quickly steamed.

I’ve found that once you stop approaching every garment as though it needs to be traditionally ironed from top to bottom, the entire process becomes much quicker. A dress that’s picked up a few creases in the wardrobe doesn’t necessarily need a full ironing session. A shirt doesn’t need a lengthy appointment with an ironing board, and something you’re planning to wear that evening can get a quick refresh.

That’s probably the biggest behavioural change for me. Garment care has become a small job rather than another chore, and psychologically that makes a surprisingly big difference.

Is a garment steamer useful for busy families?

For us, this is where I see some of the greatest value. Most parents will know the scenario: you’re dressed, the children are almost dressed, you’re already running later than you’d like and someone pulls out the exact thing they want to wear. It looks like it has spent the previous six months screwed into a ball at the bottom of a drawer.

Traditionally, this presents two choices: wear something else or commence emergency ironing. Having the IXEO Vision permanently set up has created a third option in our house. We switch it on, steam the offending garment and get going.

That ability to quickly deal with one item without setting up an entire ironing station is where it has earned its place in our home. It’s also why I think there’s an important distinction between owning an appliance that can save time and owning one that actually does. If it’s difficult to set up or inconvenient to use, chances are you won’t bother when you’re already rushing out the door.

How much space does the Tefal IXEO Vision need?

This is the main consideration I’d think about before buying one. The IXEO Vision is a freestanding appliance, so while we’ve loved having it, I wouldn’t pretend it’s necessarily the right solution for every home.

We are lucky enough to have room to leave ours standing and ready to use, and I suspect that’s a big part of why we use it so often. If you live in a smaller apartment or have very limited storage, I’d think carefully about where it is going to live and whether you can keep it somewhere easily accessible.

For us, its permanent position is a feature rather than a drawback because it’s precisely why someone can notice a creased shirt and fix it immediately. If I had to retrieve it from the back of a cupboard every time, knowing myself, there’s every chance we’d be back to wearing the other shirt.

Is the Tefal IXEO Vision worth buying if you hate ironing?

This is where I think you need to ask a slightly different question. If you already enjoy ironing, have a beautiful laundry setup and happily spend Sunday afternoon pressing the family’s clothes while listening to a podcast, you may not need someone to reinvent the process for you. I cannot relate to you, but I respect you.

The IXEO Vision makes much more sense to me for households like ours: people who want their clothes to look good but resent the amount of effort traditionally involved in getting them there. It hasn’t magically made me love ironing, but something far more useful has happened. I don’t really feel as though I’m ironing anymore.

We steam what we need when we need it, my husband does more of his own shirts, the shoulders finally get the attention they deserve and I haven’t once had to sit down and study an instruction manual. Those are the kinds of everyday changes that matter far more to me than having another appliance with an impressive list of functions.

The best time-saving products aren’t necessarily the ones that perform a household job dramatically faster. Sometimes they’re the products that remove enough friction that you stop avoiding the job altogether, and that’s what the Tefal IXEO Vision has done in our house.

It’s simple enough that we worked it out without instructions, quick enough that we’ll use it for a single shirt and versatile enough that we aren’t restricted to simply steaming clothes hanging vertically. Most importantly for us, because it stays standing and ready to go, it has become part of everyday life rather than another appliance gathering dust in a cupboard.

Would I suddenly volunteer to spend an afternoon ironing? Absolutely not; let’s not get carried away. But will I now steam the dress I actually want to wear instead of rejecting it because it’s creased? Yes. Has my husband started producing properly steamed shirts, shoulders included, within minutes? Also yes. And have I stopped considering a shopping trip a legitimate alternative to ironing? Mostly.

That’s the honest takeaway from our Tefal IXEO Vision review: for someone who would genuinely rather buy new clothes than iron the ones she already owns, that’s a pretty impressive result.
