Baking At Home!
We’ve ALL been baking more since being stuck inside, and it can be tricky finding the balance between doing a fun activity, and the kids getting bored and running off. We’ve put together some fun baking ideas that you can try out!
You and your kids will love these treats. We’ve kept the ingredient list simple, and have tried to include some more nutritionally dense foods in there! Let us know if you get to make any of them!
Homemade pikelets!
In one of those old protein shakers you’ve probably got in the back of the cupboard, mix together:
- 1 cup of self-raising flour
- 1 egg
- 1 cup of milk (of your choice)
and bang! You’ve got yourself the easiest pikelet batter, ready to be cooked up! Make sure to give your little one a go at being head chef and shaking up the mixture. You could even add a drop of food colouring to make coloured pikelets.
Pour out circles of the batter into a nonstick pan, and flip once golden (you know the drill!) Serve with greek yoghurt, fruit, or maple syrup. Yum!
Ice Cream in a Bag
We LOVE this fun idea to make with your little ones. Some of you might even remember making this when you were young! It’s a great little science experiment to do on a day in iso!
In a bag, pour in 1/2cup thickened cream, and 1/2 cup milk of your choice. Add 2 tsp of vanilla extract, 1tbsp of sugar and seal up your zip lock. Make sure you try to get most of the air out. In a bigger ziplock, fill the bag most of the way with ice, and pour over 1/4cup of salt. Throw in your smaller ice cream mixture (make sure it’s nice and sealed!) and get shaking! It should take about 6-8 minutes.
Take out the ice cream, give it a rinse under the tap to get rid of any salt remaining, and tuck in!
Banana Choc-chip Macaroons
This is SUCH a simple recipe (courtesy of Sammi Brondo – her’s is linked here)
You’ll need:
- 2 large ripe bananas, mashed
- 1 1/4 cup shredded coconut
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 2 teaspoons coconut oil
- Pinch of salt
Preheat your oven to 180. Mix all ingredients in a bowl, and spoon out tablespoon sized balls onto a baking tray lined with baking paper. Bake for 15mins, and drizzle with some extra melted chocolate on top. Store in the fridge (if they even make it there in the first place!)
Banana Ice Cream
Banana Ice cream is the easiest, healthiest treat for any kid, and is perfect as an after dinner treat, or an afternoon snack!
Freeze some peeled bananas overnight. We find it’s easiest if you chop them into thirds before freezing. Using a high speed blender or a food processor, throw in the frozen banana, and a splash of milk, and blend until creamy. Have a little bit of patience here – the banana takes a minute to turn into a creamy soft-serve consistency! Let your little one pick out some toppings – the options here are endless. We love strawberries, cacao nibs, honey, peanut butter, or even a little bit of milo!
