Founder Story: Mary, Creator of Picasso’s Parlour

“It’s not just styling. It’s storytelling. It’s childhood, curated.”

Some ideas hit like lightning bolts. For Mary, it was the moment one of her littlest partygoers looked around a carefully crafted celebration and said, “Mary, I wish I could take this all to my room.” At that moment, the concept behind Picasso’s Parlour was born.

“For many years, I planned and produced some beautifully amazing birthday parties for kids,” Mary shares. “It was like stepping into a magical world that fueled the imagination. But no sooner had we set it up, it was packed away like it never happened. So many times, parents and children would tell me they wished it could last longer. That’s when I realised: why can’t it?”

That spark ignited a new mission—transforming fleeting party magic into everyday wonder. Picasso’s Parlour now specialises in immersive, bespoke spaces that bring joy, calm, and creativity into the daily rhythm of family life.

Where Creativity Meets Childhood

Ask Mary what her own childhood dream room would’ve looked like, and she doesn’t skip a beat: “It would’ve had a giant slide or an extra cool hideout where I could invite friends to hang out after school.” That sense of play is embedded in every space she touches.

But don’t mistake playfulness for frivolity. Mary’s approach is deeply intentional. “We design spaces that feel like childhood. We listen to families, uncover what makes each child tick, and translate that into rooms full of imagination, comfort, and personality.”

Her philosophy? Every design should strike the right balance between creativity and calm. “It’s a perfect blend of fun and function,” she explains. “For kids, it’s about open-ended play and cozy corners. For parents, it’s smart storage, calming colours, and layouts that grow with their child.”

Designing for Real Life (Yes, Even Slime)

Mary knows real life isn’t always Instagram-perfect. Her secret to creating chic spaces that still survive slime, LEGO and snack crumbs? “Smart choices. Wipeable finishes. Washable slipcovers. Rugs that hide a little mess. You can have elevated style with playful touches—it just takes thoughtful design.”

When asked how she transforms toy chaos into a Pinterest-worthy haven, she lights up: “Clever storage and creative organisation,” she says. “Declutter with purpose. Use play as decor. Create clear zones and style softly with consistent colour palettes and warm textures. It’s not about hiding toys—it’s about celebrating them.”

No Theme Too Wild, No Child Too Different

Mary doesn’t shy away from a challenge—in fact, she thrives on it. “I once had to design a shared room that combined anime and llamas. Another had unicorns on one side and Disney Cars on the other. Then there was the giant stegosaurus bookcase that stretched across a 10-metre wall. I don’t believe in the word weird. I believe in possibilities.”

That same open-mindedness fuels her signature ability to design for multiple personalities under one roof. “Start with function. Prioritise needs—sleep, play, study. Then let personality lead. Even shared rooms can feel harmonious if you give each child their own corner to express themselves.”

It’s the Little Things

Among her most underrated design heroes? The humble low bookshelf. “It encourages independence, sparks quiet moments, and turns books into part of the decor,” she says. “Styled with front-facing covers, a soft cushion and cute bookends—it becomes a calm anchor in even the wildest rooms.”

And despite working on countless unique projects, Mary says the sense of fulfilment never fades. “I know this may sound cheesy, but I get the same proud feeling every time. Each interior is bespoke, and the moment it all comes to life still gets me every single time.”

What’s Next for Picasso’s Parlour?

With a growing client list and ever-expanding vision, Mary is just getting started. “We’re diving deeper into the psychology of space—creating sensory-rich playrooms and emotionally attuned bedrooms that support a child’s growth and joy,” she says. “Expect bold new collaborations, wild themes, and even a signature collection of curated styling pieces—like custom wall art and toy displays—so we can bring a little Parlour magic to more homes.”

Mary’s not here to make rooms that look like Pinterest boards. She’s here to create spaces that feel like a child’s whole world—because that’s exactly what they are.

And we can’t wait to see what she creates for us. Stay tuned—Mary is coming to design a magical, personality-packed space for my kids, and if her past work is anything to go by, it’s going to be unforgettable.
