Natalie Bassingthwaighte Brings Shirley Valentine to Life in Sydney and Brisbane

What happens when you mix humour, grit, and a holiday to Greece? You get Shirley Valentine — the hit one-woman play that’s inspiring audiences all over again, now starring Aussie favourite Natalie Bassingthwaighte.

Due to popular demand, an extra matinee has just been added in Sydney on Sunday 26 October at Theatre Royal Sydney. The show will then head north for a Brisbane season at Twelfth Night Theatre from 29 October to 8 November.

For those who haven’t met her yet, Shirley Valentine is a middle-aged Liverpool mum whose life has become all routine and no sparkle. Talking to her kitchen wall, she dreams of more — and when a friend offers her a ticket to Greece, she makes a bold leap that changes everything. It’s funny, heartfelt, and a reminder that it’s never too late to rediscover yourself.

Natalie Bassingthwaighte is no stranger to the stage (Jagged Little Pill, Chicago), screen (Neighbours, Underbelly), or music charts (The Rogue Traders), but this might just be her most powerful role yet. Reviewers have been unanimous:

  • “An impressive and endearing performance that had the audience on its feet” – The Age
  • “Deliciously funny, poignantly moving, inspiringly uplifting” – Man in Chair
  • “ Grab your girlfriends and make a night of it… You’ll leave laughing, inspired and maybe even planning your own adventure” – MelbourniseMe

It’s more than theatre — it’s a night that will have you laughing, tearing up, and maybe booking your own trip to the Greek Islands.
