Little Adventures: Family-Friendly Places to Explore Around Sydney
There’s never been a better time to rediscover our own backyard and soak up everything Sydney has to offer—with your mini sidekick in tow. Whether you’re chasing sea breezes, green open spaces, or cute cafes with a kids’ menu, Sydney is full of family-friendly gems just waiting to be explored.
The best part? You don’t need to plan a full-blown holiday to make memories. Sometimes, all it takes is a packed lunch, a pram, and a dash of adventure. We’ve rounded up some of our top picks for easy, fun and relaxed outings around Sydney that both parents and little ones will love.
Let us know where you end up—we’d love to hear what you discover!
Palm Beach – Visit Palm Beach
If you’re craving a beach day that feels like a mini holiday without leaving Sydney, Palm Beach is the spot. It’s a popular location for a reason—crystal-clear water, gentle waves, and a vibe that instantly makes you breathe easier. It’s also the filming location for Home and Away, which may or may not impress your toddler, but it’ll give you some nostalgic feels.
This area is great for families because of its wide, open space and plenty of easy access to cafes and bathrooms. You’ll find ample parking and public transport options too, including a ferry ride from Ettalong if you’re coming from the Central Coast.
Must-dos: grab fish and chips on the grass, walk up to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse if you’re feeling energetic, or browse one of the lovely local boutiques while someone else watches the kids for 10 minutes (a girl can dream).
Circular Quay – Plan Your Visit
A ferry ride to Circular Quay might be one of the easiest wins when it comes to entertaining toddlers. The journey alone is part of the magic—wave to the Harbour Bridge, spot the Opera House, and enjoy the breeze as you cruise into one of Sydney’s most iconic destinations.
Once you arrive, there’s plenty to explore. Walk along the foreshore, check out the buskers (which the kids will love), and grab lunch at one of the harbourside restaurants. The Museum of Contemporary Art often features child-friendly exhibitions or spaces to relax, and if you time it right, you may catch a festival or pop-up market in full swing.
Insider tip: Circular Quay can get busy, so morning visits are often more peaceful. Bring a stroller with decent suspension—there are cobblestones in parts.
Rose Bay – Explore Rose Bay
Rose Bay is a stunning harbour-side suburb that offers beautiful walks, safe swimming spots, and the kind of scenery that makes you want to slow down. The Rose Bay to Watsons Bay walk is particularly popular with families—it winds through hidden coves, bushland tracks, and lookouts that deliver seriously photogenic views.
If you’re not up for the full walk (it’s around 8km one way), start small. Even a simple stroll along the promenade is enough to keep little ones engaged, especially with the beach just steps away. There are grassy areas for picnics, playgrounds nearby, and plenty of shade if you’re toting a newborn or sensitive-skinned toddler.
One word of advice: be prepared for hills and bring water bottles—you’ll get those steps in.
Homebush (Sydney Olympic Park) Things to Do at Sydney Olympic Park
For a full day of activity and play, Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush is a no-brainer. It’s not just a sports hub—it’s a destination packed with playgrounds, open space, interactive exhibits and more.
The Aquatic Centre is a major highlight for young families. It has heated pools, splash zones, and an indoor play area that will keep toddlers entertained for hours (and hopefully lead to a solid afternoon nap).
You’ll also find the Blaxland Riverside Park nearby—one of the best playgrounds in Sydney. Think giant slides, water features, tunnels, and climbing frames galore. It’s ideal for energetic kids and even has shaded picnic areas and BBQs for those longer stays.
Getting there is easy via train, or there’s plenty of parking on site. Make sure to check what’s on before you go—there’s often a festival or sporting event that might add even more fun to your day.
Somewhere You’ve Never Been
Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you didn’t plan. Pick a spot you’ve always meant to visit—maybe it’s a beach across the city, a park you’ve only seen on Instagram, or a neighbourhood filled with cute bakeries and leafy streets.
Grab your pram, snacks, sunscreen and an open mind, and hit the road. This could mean a coastal drive along the Grand Pacific Drive, a wander through Glebe Markets, or a morning in Parramatta’s revitalised riverside precinct.
The point is, Sydney is huge and there’s so much to explore. You don’t have to go far to feel like you’ve had a getaway.
Try flipping a coin, letting the kids pick, or spinning a map—whatever gets you out the door and into something new.
Tips for a Smooth Family Outing
We know travelling with kids is never truly easy, but a little prep goes a long way. Here are some quick tips from our Parenthood360 crew:
- Always pack snacks. More than you think you need.
- Bring a change of clothes for everyone—yes, you too.
- Baby wipes fix everything. Literally.
- Don’t over-schedule. Let the day unfold at toddler pace.
- Set expectations low, and you’ll be delighted when something goes to plan.
Whether you’re on a beach towel at Palm Beach or exploring the sculpture garden in Circular Quay, what matters most is making space for connection, laughter, and a little chaos along the way.
