Vivid Sydney – Tumbalong Kids: The Mik Maks

Vivid Sydney is back, and thankfully, they’ve remembered that kids exist and don’t always love a 9pm start. Tumbalong Kids is the festival’s dedicated family hour, kicking off every Saturday at 5pm. On May 23, the stage belongs to The Mik Maks—the high-energy band that has mastered the art of getting toddlers to dance like no one’s watching. It’s the ultimate pre-show before the city truly lights up. Think of it as a warm-up for the Light Walk: let them jump, scream, and sing their hearts out on the green at Tumbalong Park while it’s still relatively easy to spot them in a crowd. Once the set finishes at 6pm, the lights across the harbour switch on, and you’re perfectly positioned to start your Vivid adventure. It’s free, it’s fun, and it’s the best way to do Vivid with kids without the ‘I’m tired’ meltdown before you’ve even reached the Opera House. Grab a spot on the grass early, maybe a snack from the nearby food trucks, and let the neon-lit fun begin.
