Somewhere Between School Drop-Off and the Bathroom Mirror, I’d Started Putting Myself Last

Between school lunches, work deadlines, dance lessons, after-school sport, grocery shopping and trying to remember which child needed what on which day, looking after my own skin had quietly slipped to the bottom of the list. Like so many mums, I was incredibly good at making appointments for everyone else. The kids never missed a dental check-up, my husband eventually booked the physio I’d been reminding him about for months, and even the dog somehow made it to the groomer on time. Yet when it came to me, self-care always seemed to be something I’d get around to “next month.”

It wasn’t that I didn’t notice the changes. Every morning I’d catch my reflection while rushing to get ready and wonder why I looked permanently exhausted. My skin felt dull, the fine lines seemed more noticeable than they used to be and no amount of concealer could disguise the fact that I looked tired, even after a decent night’s sleep. I’d buy another serum because someone recommended it, add another moisturiser because it was on sale or convince myself the latest trending ingredient might finally be the answer. The products weren’t necessarily bad, but they also weren’t giving me the confidence that I was actually doing the right thing for my skin.

The beauty industry certainly doesn’t make it easy. Every time I opened Instagram or TikTok, another “must-have” product appeared in my feed. Friends swore by different brands, beauty influencers insisted I needed ingredients I’d never heard of and every article seemed to recommend another treatment I should be considering. Vitamin C. Retinol. Peptides. LED therapy. Skin needling. Hydration boosters. Collagen stimulators. The list felt endless, and the more I researched, the more confused I became. Instead of feeling empowered, I found myself wondering whether I genuinely needed these products or whether I was simply falling for clever marketing.

As mums, we already make hundreds of decisions every single day. We’re constantly weighing up what’s best for our children, managing family schedules, juggling work and trying to keep life running smoothly. The last thing most of us have time for is becoming skincare experts as well. I wasn’t looking for perfect skin, nor was I hoping to turn back the clock. I simply wanted healthy skin and honest advice from someone who understood what they were talking about. I wanted to stop wasting money on products that promised everything and start understanding what my own skin actually needed.

What I really wanted was one trusted place that could bring everything together. Somewhere I could ask questions without feeling silly, understand my options without being overwhelmed and leave with a clear plan that actually suited my skin and my lifestyle. I didn’t want to bounce between different clinics, beauty counters and online reviews trying to piece together conflicting advice. As a busy mum, I simply didn’t have the time.

That desire to stop guessing and start understanding was exactly what led me to book an appointment at The Woollahra Clinic, founded by A/Prof Bish Soliman, a Sydney specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon. I wasn’t searching for cosmetic procedures or a dramatic transformation. I was simply looking for clarity and hoping to find someone I could trust to guide me in the right direction.

I Thought I Was Booking a Facial

The Woollahra Clinic

Walking into The Woollahra Clinic, I genuinely believed I knew what the appointment would involve. I’d enjoyed facials before, although like many mums, they were usually years apart because there always seemed to be something else that needed my attention first. I was expecting a relaxing treatment, beautiful skincare products and perhaps a few recommendations to take home. It felt like a small act of self-care that I’d finally decided I deserved.

From the moment I arrived, however, it became clear this wasn’t going to be the typical “lie down and relax” facial I’d experienced elsewhere. The clinic immediately felt warm and welcoming, and there was an authenticity that put me at ease. Nothing felt rushed or transactional. Instead, I felt like I was being welcomed into an environment where taking the time to understand each client genuinely mattered.

As the Express Facial and Lymphatic Massage treatment began, I quickly realised this facial was about much more than simply cleansing and hydrating my skin. Every product that was used had a purpose, every technique was explained and every conversation naturally centred around helping me better understand my own skin. Rather than lying there wondering what was happening, I found myself genuinely interested in why certain ingredients were being chosen and how they supported the overall health of my skin.

One of the highlights of the experience was the lymphatic massage. I’d heard the term before but had never really understood what it involved or why so many people recommended it. As the treatment progressed, we spoke about how gentle lymphatic drainage techniques can encourage circulation, reduce puffiness and support the skin’s natural processes. It was incredibly relaxing, but it was also refreshing to understand that many treatments aren’t about dramatic changes. Sometimes they’re simply about helping your body function at its best and supporting healthy skin from the inside out.

During the facial, our conversation naturally drifted beyond the products themselves and into my everyday skincare routine. That’s when my therapist casually asked whether I applied my skincare to my neck and décolletage as consistently as I did my face. I laughed because, if I was being completely honest, the answer was no. Like so many women, my routine stopped at my jawline without me ever really thinking about it.

The more we talked, the more obvious it became. My neck experiences exactly the same sun exposure, environmental damage and natural ageing process as my face, yet I’d unintentionally ignored it for years. It wasn’t presented as a mistake or an opportunity to recommend more products. It was simply one of those conversations that makes you stop and think, “Why have I never considered that before?” It was a small observation, but it completely changed the way I thought about my skincare routine moving forward.

By the time the facial came to an end, I felt exactly what I’d hoped to feel. Relaxed, refreshed and grateful I’d finally taken a little time for myself. More surprisingly, though, I also felt better informed than when I’d arrived. I genuinely believed my appointment had finished and was already thinking about heading home when my therapist suggested one final step—a comprehensive skin consultation and analysis. Assuming it would simply confirm everything we’d already discussed, I happily agreed.

I had no idea it was about to become the most fascinating part of the entire appointment.

The Moment Everything Finally Made Sense

The Woollahra Clinic Booked a Facial Left With a Skin PhD 3

As someone who likes to understand the “why” behind things, I was genuinely curious about what a skin consultation would involve. I’d imagined someone taking a quick look at my skin, recommending a few products and perhaps suggesting I book another appointment down the track. What actually happened was something entirely different.

Using advanced skin imaging technology, my therapist captured detailed images of my skin that revealed far more than anything I’d ever been able to see in my bathroom mirror. Looking at the screen was both fascinating and slightly confronting. Pigmentation that I’d barely noticed, areas of dehydration, evidence of years of sun exposure and subtle changes happening beneath the surface all became visible in a matter of moments. It certainly wasn’t the most flattering set of photos I’ve ever had taken, but for the first time I wasn’t looking at my skin through the lens of what I disliked. I was looking at it through the lens of understanding.

What impressed me most wasn’t the technology itself, it was the conversation that followed. At no point did anyone use the images to point out flaws or make me feel like I suddenly needed a long list of treatments. Instead, we sat together and talked through what the images were actually showing, why those changes had occurred and, most importantly, what they meant for me. Years of sun exposure, hormones, hydration, lifestyle, stress and the natural ageing process had all played a role in shaping my skin, and suddenly it became obvious why copying someone else’s skincare routine would never deliver the same results.

It also answered a question I hadn’t even realised I’d been asking for years: why weren’t all those products I’d bought making the difference I’d hoped for? The reality is that I’d been trying to solve problems without ever really understanding what the problems were. Like many women, I’d purchased skincare based on recommendations from friends, glowing online reviews and social media trends, assuming that if something worked brilliantly for someone else, it would probably work for me too. Sitting there looking at my own skin analysis, I realised just how personalised good skincare really needs to be.

The consultation also brought the entire appointment together. As we discussed the results, I found myself thinking back to the facial I’d just experienced. The products that had been selected, the lymphatic massage, the conversations about hydration and even our discussion about caring for my neck and décolletage suddenly made complete sense. None of those decisions had been random or based on the latest trend. They were thoughtful recommendations designed around my skin, my concerns and what would genuinely benefit me.

That was probably the biggest shift in my thinking. Before visiting The Woollahra Clinic, I’d assumed a skin appointment was about choosing treatments. I now realise it’s actually about understanding your skin well enough to make informed decisions. The treatment itself was certainly relaxing and enjoyable, but the consultation gave me something much more valuable than glowing skin for a few days. It gave me confidence. Confidence that I finally understood what my skin needed, confidence that I could stop wasting money on products that weren’t right for me and confidence that I didn’t have to navigate the overwhelming world of skincare on my own anymore.

As a busy mum, that’s exactly what I’d been looking for all along. I didn’t need another product to add to my bathroom shelf or another beauty trend to keep up with. I needed someone I trusted to cut through the noise, explain what was actually happening with my skin and help me create a plan that made sense for my lifestyle. In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with advice from every direction, having one trusted expert who can guide you through the confusion feels incredibly refreshing.

Walking out of The Woollahra Clinic, my skin certainly felt beautiful, but that wasn’t what stayed with me the most. What I kept thinking about on the drive home was the peace of mind that comes from finally understanding where to start. Instead of second-guessing every purchase or wondering whether the latest trending product was worth the hype, I now had something far more valuable, access to a personalised roadmap created specifically for me.

Looking back, that’s why I believe more women are moving away from chasing the latest beauty trend and towards finding one trusted clinic that can support them over time. It’s not about doing more. It’s about making better decisions with the guidance of someone who genuinely understands your skin. For busy mums juggling careers, children, households and everything in between, that might just be the biggest luxury of all.
