We Found the Freezer Shortcut That Makes a Basic Dinner Look Like You Actually Tried
Ready-made potato gratins have quietly become my favourite freezer shortcut, and it’s all thanks to one particular part of making dinner that I find disproportionately annoying. It isn’t usually the main event. Steak takes minutes. Chicken can go straight into the oven. Fish is easy enough. Even throwing together a salad rarely requires much thought. It is the inevitable question that comes immediately afterwards: what are we having with it?
There are only so many times I can rotate through chips, mash, rice and roast potatoes before dinner starts feeling suspiciously familiar. And while I love a proper potato gratin, it sits firmly in the category of food I’m very happy to eat when somebody else has done the work. Homemade potato gratin sounds deceptively simple until you’re standing there slicing potatoes incredibly thinly, layering them, adding cream and cheese, getting the seasoning right and then waiting for the whole thing to cook through. Lovely on a Sunday when I have nowhere to be. Far less appealing at 5.30pm when someone is asking for the third time what’s for dinner.
Which is why Potato Utopia immediately caught my attention. The concept is wonderfully straightforward: ready-made potato gratins that take one of the more labour-intensive parts of dinner and essentially sort it for you. What I hadn’t realised initially is that there isn’t just one traditional potato bake either. The range includes Four Cheese, Parmesan & Black Pepper, Spinach & Ricotta and the newer Mozzarella & Hot Honey.
I know I can make potato gratin myself. I actually enjoy cooking when I have the time. But not every Tuesday afternoon do I have the time, energy or inclination to pull out a recipe card and start making the side dish from scratch. Sometimes I just want dinner sorted, and if I can make it look like I’ve put considerably more effort into it than I actually have, even better.
What exactly is Potato Utopia?
Think of Potato Utopia as the part of dinner you don’t have to think about. These ready-made potato gratins come in individual portions rather than one enormous family-sized potato bake, which initially seemed like a fairly small detail but actually makes a lot of sense in our house. I can cook however many we need, and I’m not committed to an entire tray of potato bake when only some of us want it.
The other thing I like is that the flavours are genuinely different. Four Cheese is the familiar comfort-food option, Parmesan & Black Pepper feels a little more grown-up, Spinach & Ricotta gives me another way of getting some greens onto the plate, and Mozzarella & Hot Honey brings something completely different.
That means I’m not necessarily buying these for one specific meal. I can see different boxes coming out of the freezer depending on whether I’m feeding the girls on a weeknight, we’re having steak after they’ve gone to bed, or friends are coming over for dinner.
Which Potato Utopia gratin would I choose?

Four Cheese is probably the easiest place to start, particularly if your children aren’t thrilled when you start experimenting with their food. It’s creamy, cheesy and familiar, and I can put it beside chicken, steak or sausages without having to explain what I’ve done to the potatoes. Some nights, not having to negotiate dinner is reason enough to choose a flavour.
The Spinach & Ricotta is the one I was particularly happy about. I’m forever looking for ways to get a few more vegetables into the girls without turning dinner into a discussion about vegetables. If I can put something on their plate that they actually want to eat and sneak some spinach in there at the same time, I’m taking that as a win. Could I make a beautiful spinach and ricotta potato gratin myself? Absolutely. Am I doing that from scratch every Tuesday? Absolutely not. If I’ve managed to get dinner on the table, they’ve eaten some spinach and it hasn’t cost me an hour in the kitchen, I’m pretty happy with myself.
Parmesan & Black Pepper is much more the flavour I’d pull out alongside a steak or when we want something a little more grown-up. It’s still familiar, but has a bit more going on than your standard creamy potato bake. It’s also the sort of side I’d happily serve to friends without feeling as though I’d taken an obvious shortcut.
Then there’s Mozzarella & Hot Honey, the newest flavour in the range. Potato Utopia describes it as layers of potato and cream with gooey mozzarella and a drizzle of hot honey, so you get that combination of creamy, cheesy potato with sweetness and a little heat. This is probably the one I’d save for us rather than automatically putting it in front of the girls. I can already see this coming out with steak and salad for a late dinner once everyone is finally in bed.
Are ready-made potato gratins actually worth buying?
I don’t think the fairest comparison is a box of Potato Utopia versus a bag of potatoes. Obviously, I can buy potatoes and make something myself for less. That’s not why I’d buy these.
For me, ready-made potato gratins are competing with the night when I’ve organised the chicken but completely forgotten that chicken isn’t actually a whole dinner. They’re competing with throwing chips in the oven yet again because they’re quick. They’re competing with the elaborate side dish I thought I’d make for friends before remembering I also need to make everything else. That’s when I want convenience. But I still want dinner to look and taste like something I actually wanted to eat. There are nights when I couldn’t care less what dinner looks like. We’ve all had those nights. But there are also nights when I want something easy without dinner feeling like I’ve taken the easy option. That’s where these make sense for me.
Could ready-made potato gratins solve the 5.30pm side-dish problem?

This is probably where they fit best into our house. I know there are nights when I have time to pull out a recipe, prep everything properly and make the whole meal from scratch. Then there are the Tuesdays when we’ve got activities, someone needs something for school tomorrow, the girls are hungry and I’ve only thought as far ahead as the chicken.
Those are the nights I want ready-made potato gratins in the freezer. I can cook the chicken, throw some vegetables on the plate, add a gratin and suddenly I’ve actually made dinner rather than just cooked a piece of chicken. If it’s the Spinach & Ricotta and I’ve managed to sneak a little more spinach into the girls at the same time, even better. I don’t need my potato to revolutionise my life. I just need it to make Tuesday dinner easier.
And I think that’s where convenience food sometimes gets judged a little unfairly. Yes, I could make everything myself. Most of us could. But having the ability to make something from scratch and having the time to do it every single night are two completely different things.
Why do I love that they’re individual?
Because I don’t live in a household where everyone reliably eats the same dinner at the same time. Does anyone? One of the girls has an activity, someone suddenly doesn’t like the thing they happily ate last week, we’re eating later, or I’ve cooked enough for four people and somehow only two people are hungry. A giant tray of potato bake doesn’t always work particularly well with the reality of family dinner.
With ready-made potato gratins portioned individually, I can just cook what we need. I can give the girls Four Cheese or Spinach & Ricotta and have Parmesan & Black Pepper or Hot Honey ourselves. If only two of us are eating them, I cook two. I’m not making two separate potato dishes or reheating an enormous tray for the next three days. It’s simple, but simple is precisely what I’m looking for at dinner time.
Would I serve them when friends come over?

Absolutely. In fact, this might be when I appreciate ready-made potato gratins most. I have a terrible habit of inviting people over for a “simple dinner” and then somehow deciding I need multiple sides, something before dinner and probably dessert as well. I love cooking for people, but I don’t love still being in the kitchen trying to finish everything while everyone else is sitting down having a drink.
This is exactly the sort of shortcut I need to get better at taking. If I’ve cooked a beautiful steak or roast, made a salad and sorted the vegetables, do I really need to prove anything by spending another hour slicing potatoes? No. Put an individual gratin on each plate and I’m very happy to take the compliment.
They also look much neater than spooning potato bake out of one enormous dish and watching all those beautiful layers collapse somewhere between the baking tray and the plate. I’d happily serve Parmesan & Black Pepper with steak and greens, Spinach & Ricotta with chicken or salmon, or bring out Mozzarella & Hot Honey when I want the side dish to be a little more interesting. Nobody needs to know how little effort the potatoes required. Although knowing me, I’d probably tell everyone anyway.
What can you actually serve with Potato Utopia gratins?
Honestly, with ready-made potato gratins, I’d keep this fairly simple most of the time. Steak, chicken, lamb, sausages, salmon, vegetables, salad. Done. Potato Utopia does have some much more adventurous recipe ideas, including Hot Honey Steak Tartare Gratin, Mozzarella Hot Honey Potato Gratin Bake and Potato Gratin Shakshuka, so there are plenty of options if you do want to get creative.
But if I’m being realistic, most of the time I’m not going to take my convenient potato gratin and turn it into another recipe. That’s almost defeating the point for me. On a Tuesday night, I want to cook some chicken or steak, add vegetables, put a gratin beside it and call dinner done. Not every meal needs me to pull out a recipe card, and I’m becoming increasingly comfortable with that.
On the weekend when I actually feel like cooking? That’s different. Then I might play around with them. But the fact that I don’t have to is the whole reason I want them in my freezer in the first place.
What about date night at home?

There is a very small window in our house between deciding we’ll have a nice dinner together after the girls go to bed and deciding we’re too tired and ordering something instead. This is exactly the sort of thing that could keep us on the right side of that line. A couple of steaks, a good salad, two ready-made potato gratins and a glass of wine. Done. It feels like we’ve made ourselves a proper dinner, but I haven’t spent an hour making potato gratin at 8pm.
That’s probably when I’d pull out Parmesan & Black Pepper or Mozzarella & Hot Honey. If the girls are eating with us earlier in the evening, Four Cheese or Spinach & Ricotta makes more sense. I’m not consciously creating different “use occasions” for potato gratin. I’m literally just opening the freezer and choosing the one that suits who’s eating dinner that night.
And that’s probably why having four different flavours appeals to me more than having one giant potato bake sitting in the fridge.
So, will I actually keep Potato Utopia in the freezer?
Yes. Not because I’ve suddenly forgotten how to make potatoes, and not because I’m never going to make potato gratin from scratch again. I will. There are Sundays when I genuinely enjoy pulling out a recipe and spending time cooking. Tuesday at 5.30pm is not always one of them.
That’s where ready-made potato gratins like Potato Utopia have won me over. I can cook some chicken, throw together vegetables, add a Spinach & Ricotta gratin and feel quite pleased that I’ve managed to sneak some spinach into the girls at the same time. If we’re having steak after they’re in bed, I can pull out Parmesan & Black Pepper or Hot Honey and suddenly our very ordinary dinner at home feels like we’ve made a little more effort.
When friends come over, I can spend my time making the part of dinner I actually want to make rather than standing there slicing potatoes. And when everything is chaotic and I simply need to get dinner onto the table, there’s Four Cheese waiting in the freezer. That’s the kind of shortcut I want. It doesn’t need to revolutionise dinner or pretend to be something it isn’t. It just needs to make dinner easier, still be something we actually want to eat and, ideally, make me look like I’ve tried a little harder than I have.
I’ll happily take the credit.
